The BASIC WRITING FOR THE 3rd GRADE is a small group class that provides instruction aligned with the California's Common Core State Standards in the following areas:
Active Reading (Reading Comprehension): Students will read and understand 4-5 novels, describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings), explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events, and refer to parts of stories when writing or speaking about a text to describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections.
Writing: Students will write explanatory compositions to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. With guidance, students will introduce a topic, develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details, use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, therefore, since) to connect ideas within categories of information and provide a concluding statement.
Vocabulary: Students will integrate knowledge of individual words to enhance their writing, add to knowledge of prefixes (e.g., un-, re-, pre-, bi-, mis-, dis-) and suffixes (e.g., -er, -est, -ful) and learn to use sentence and word context to find the meaning of unknown words.
Grammar: For the grammar module of the class, students will learn to identify subject-verb agreement, the correct use of pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and use past, present and future verb tenses properly.
CAASPP test preparation will be integrated to formally prepare students specifically emphasizing the areas of reading comprehension, sentence structure, writing strategies and vocabulary. Some book purchases will be necessary. Students can expect homework and weekly quizzes. Grades will be given.
